Invasive. (Whitehead, J. (2008) Priorities for Control: A Risk Assessment of Introduced Species on the Falkland Islands. South Atlantic Invasive Species Project ); Field studies suggest that lichens on rocks are, as expected, severely depleted in reindeer areas, as are certain vascular plant species such as the Prickly-burr (unpublished data).
As long as reindeer numbers are sensibly managed on the islands then their biodiversity impacts may not be significant. If reindeer were allowed to become feral on the Falklands then there would be possible impacts of over-grazing of tussac grass and degradation of plant communities (C. Miller, 2007). Where herds are actively managed, particularly on Beaver Island which is regularly culled, there is no evidence of overgrazing of their favoured food plants, being mostly mosses and dock. Little tussac grass is eaten (SoE, 2007). (Whitehead, J. (2008) Priorities for Control: A Risk Assessment of Introduced Species on the Falkland Islands. South Atlantic Invasive Species Project ); Field studies suggest that lichens on rocks are, as expected, severely depleted in reindeer areas, as are certain vascular plant species such as the Prickly-burr (unpublished data). In particular the impact of reindeer on Tussac stands should be investigated. The reindeer on Weddell Island were not seen during the last survey and there were no obvious impacts noted.(Upson, R. (2012). Important Plant Areas of the Falkland Islands. Unpublished Report, Falklands Conservation. 80 pp.); Negative. Rated level 5 with high confidence. (Department of Agriculture, 2019. Reindeer were originally imported from South Georgia. Introduction pathway via farm. (Whitehead, J. (2008) Priorities for Control: A Risk Assessment of Introduced Species on the Falkland Islands. South Atlantic Invasive Species Project );
