Ascension's only native shrub, Oldenlandia adscensionis, is closely-related to the widespread invasive Spermacoce verticilata. In both cases, it is not unlikely that the two relatives hybridised, and the abundant alien may have simply overwhelmed the native species. (Lambdon, P. & Darlow, A.
