Guanaco Are Native To Chile. A Herd Of Around 400 Animals Is Managed. Removal Of Guanaco From Staats Island Was Suggested In 1970 But Was Opposed And The Owners Now Manage The Island For Guanaco Research. Invasive. The colony on Staats Island has destroyed large areas of native tussac causing soil erosion and has severely depleted the habitat for landbirds (Woods and Woods, 2006).
