Invasive. (B. Summers, Pers. Comm, 19/12/07). (Whitehead, J. (2008) Priorities for Control: A Risk Assessment of Introduced Species on the Falkland Islands. South Atlantic Invasive Species Project );
Biodiversity impacts of rats are significant, especially on small ground-nesting birds. Breeding of the tussac bird and the Cobb’s wren has become restricted to cat and rat-free islands. The presence of rats on islands in the Falklands has been found to be negatively associated with the presence of seven of the nine species of native passerines that breed regularly in the Falkland Islands (Hall et al 2002). Rats may also have negative impacts on native vegetation (Varnham, 2005). Rats are certainly having impacts on Ramsar sites and Important Bird Areas on the Falklands (B. Summers, Pers. Comm, 19/12/07). (Whitehead, J. (2008) Priorities for Control: A Risk Assessment of Introduced Species on the Falkland Islands. South Atlantic Invasive Species Project );
